How to play 20 Questions with AI
A full game takes a few minutes. Here is how a round of Mode A goes:
- Pick a mode: Mode A (the AI guesses your secret) or Mode B (you guess the AI's secret).
- Think of something commonly known: an animal, an object, a food, a place or a famous character. Keep it to yourself.
- Answer each numbered question with yes, no or sort of.
- The AI can spend a question on a guess. A wrong guess still counts toward the 20.
- If it names your secret by Question 20/20, it wins. If not, you win and reveal what it was.
Two ways to play
Mode A: you think, it asks — one yes/no question per turn, counted out of 20, with guesses that cost a question when wrong. Mode B: it commits to a secret and answers your questions honestly until you crack it or run out.
How the AI guesses what you're thinking
It opens with broad questions that split the options roughly in half, like "Is it alive?" or "Is it bigger than a microwave?", then narrows down using every answer you have given. It never asks about something your earlier answers already ruled out. Twenty yes/no answers can in theory tell apart about a million different things, which is why the game is harder to win than it looks.
